The Basilica of Our Lady of Salvation is a Roman Catholic pilgrimage church in Popenguine, which is the destination of thousands of foot-pilgrims from the entire archbishopric of Dakar on Whit Monday. The faithful here worship the face of a black Madonna in a grotto. For the Pope's visit in 1992, a stadium with many seats was specially grown at the church, so that people could be accommodated, who had traveled from all over Sénégal. On this occasion, the then Pope, John Paul II raised the church to "Basilica Minor". This makes her the only church in Sénégal to bear this title.
Popenguine is a fishing village with about 1000 inhabitants and is located in a beautiful bay on the Senegalese coast, about 60 kilometers south of Dakar.

The colors that come through all the beautiful stained glass windows are impressive.
The basilica is the destination of an annual pilgrimage on Whit Monday, in which believers from neighboring countries and Muslims also take part, with the Muslims also helping to organize the pilgrimage to Mary. Many pilgrims come from Dakar to Popenguine on foot.
Worth a visit.
