Fort Saint-Elme overlooks the small bays of Collioure and Port-Vendres.
On the foundation of an eighteenth-century lighthouse, Emperor Charles V had a revolutionary fortress built in 1538 in the shape of a star: without dead angles, with oblique, several meters thick walls, which withstood the most modern artillery of that time. In the 17th century, Vauban wants to expand Port-Vendres into an extremely important military port with the Fort Saint Elme as a cornerstone. In Fort Saint-Elme, Habsburgs and Valois met each other, then the Bourbons. It therefore tells a five-hundred-year-old, largely unknown story.
