In front of the church of St. Martin in the old town stand the bronze figures of Tünnes and Schäl. The thick nose of Tünnes is already rubbed clean, because a strong grip on it should bring good luck.
Tünnes and Schäl belong to the city of Cologne like Kölsch and Carnival. They are the caricatures of the petty-bourgeois city dweller and the farmer who has just moved from the state to Cologne. Partly smart, some stupid, but in any case disrespectful and extremely quick-witted. Tünnes and Schälel are still good for dozens of jokes today.

In front of the Great St. Martin Church in the Old Town stand the bronze figures of Tünnes and Schäl. Tünnes's large nose is worn smooth, as a firm grip on it is said to bring good luck.

Tünnes and Schäl are as much a part of Cologne as Kölsch beer and Carnival. They are caricatures of the petit-bourgeois city dweller and the farmer who has just moved to Cologne from the countryside. Sometimes clever, sometimes foolish, but always irreverent and extremely quick-witted. Even today, Tünnes and Schäl are good for dozens of jokes in Carnival speeches.
