The small village of Grainau lies directly below the steep rock faces of the Zugspitze - it is hardly spectacular and picturesque at the same time. Not only are there quaint guesthouses and cozy accommodations here, but from there, the famous cogwheel railway takes you directly and very nostalgically up to the highest peak in Germany.

    Najczęściej zadawane pytania

What are the best hiking trails in Grainau for beginners or families with children?

Grainau offers several excellent options for less experienced hikers or families. The paths around Badersee are particularly gentle and picturesque, perfect for a leisurely stroll. Another great choice is the circular walk around Lake Eibsee, which is mostly flat and offers stunning views of the Zugspitze. For a slightly longer but still manageable route, consider the trails leading towards Hammersbach, which often feature well-maintained paths and scenic river sections.

Where can I find parking for hiking trails in Grainau?

Parking in Grainau can fill up quickly, especially during peak season and on weekends. There are designated parking areas near the Eibsee (often paid) and at the Zugspitzbahnhof Grainau. For trails starting directly from the village, look for public parking lots, though these may require a fee. Arriving early in the morning is highly recommended to secure a spot, particularly if you plan to hike popular routes.

Are there public transport options to access hiking trails from Grainau?

Yes, Grainau is well-connected by public transport, making it easy to access various trailheads. The Bayerische Zugspitzbahn (Bavarian Zugspitze Railway) has a station in Grainau, providing access towards the Zugspitze and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Local bus services also connect different parts of Grainau and surrounding areas, allowing hikers to reach starting points for trails around Eibsee, Hammersbach, and other popular spots without a car.

Are dogs allowed on hiking trails and public transport in the Grainau area?

Generally, dogs are welcome on most hiking trails in the Grainau area, provided they are kept on a leash, especially in nature protection areas and near livestock. Always carry waste bags and ensure your dog is well-behaved. On the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn, dogs are usually permitted with a special ticket. It's advisable to check specific rules for cable cars or enclosed attractions if you plan to use them with your dog.

What should I wear for summer hiking in Grainau?

For summer hiking in Grainau, layering is key due to changing mountain weather. Wear moisture-wicking base layers, comfortable hiking trousers or shorts, and a light fleece or jacket. Always pack a waterproof and windproof outer layer, even on sunny days, as sudden showers or temperature drops can occur. Sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support are essential, and don't forget sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen) and plenty of water.

Can I go wild swimming in Grainau's lakes?

While Grainau is home to beautiful lakes like Eibsee and Badersee, wild swimming regulations can vary. Swimming is generally permitted in designated areas of both lakes. Badersee, with its clear, emerald waters, is particularly inviting for a refreshing dip. Always be mindful of local signage, water temperatures (which can be quite cold even in summer), and respect the natural environment. Avoid swimming in undesignated areas or disturbing wildlife.

What are some hidden gems or less crowded hiking spots near Grainau?

Beyond the popular Eibsee and Zugspitze routes, consider exploring the trails around the Höllentalklamm Gorge (Hell Valley Gorge). While the gorge itself can be busy, the trails leading to and from it, especially those higher up towards the Höllentalangerhütte, offer breathtaking scenery and can be less crowded. Another option is to explore the paths on the northern side of Grainau, towards the Kramerspitz, which provide different perspectives of the valley and are often quieter.

What is the best time of year to visit Grainau for hiking, considering crowds?

The summer months (July and August) are popular for hiking, offering the warmest weather and full access to all trails, but also the largest crowds. To avoid the busiest times while still enjoying good conditions, consider visiting in late spring (May-June) or early autumn (September-October). During these shoulder seasons, the weather is often pleasant, the scenery is beautiful (spring blossoms or autumn colors), and the trails are generally less congested, offering a more tranquil experience.

Are there specific circular walks recommended around Grainau?

Yes, Grainau is ideal for circular walks. A classic is the Eibsee circular trail, which offers stunning views of the lake and its islands. Another popular option is the loop around Badersee, which is shorter and very scenic. For a more challenging circular route, you can combine trails through the Hammersbach valley, potentially extending towards the Höllentalklamm and returning via different paths, offering varied landscapes and elevations.

How does hiking in Grainau compare to trails directly around Eibsee?

Hiking in Grainau offers a broader range of experiences compared to focusing solely on Eibsee. While Eibsee trails are renowned for their stunning lake views and relatively easy circular path, Grainau serves as a gateway to more diverse terrain. From Grainau, you can access trails leading up towards the Zugspitze, into the Höllentalklamm Gorge, or explore the valleys and lower mountain slopes. Eibsee is a highlight within the Grainau region, but Grainau itself provides access to a wider variety of difficulty levels and landscapes, from gentle forest walks to challenging alpine ascents.

What are the options for winter hiking in Grainau?

Grainau transforms into a winter wonderland, offering numerous opportunities for winter hiking and snowshoeing. Many of the lower-lying trails, such as those around Badersee or along the Hammersbach, are often cleared or suitable for winter walks. For more adventurous hikers, designated snowshoe trails provide access to deeper snow and more secluded areas. Always check local conditions, trail closures, and avalanche warnings. Essential gear includes warm, waterproof clothing, sturdy winter boots, and potentially snowshoes or microspikes for icy conditions.

How can I reach the Zugspitze summit from Grainau?

The most convenient way to reach the Zugspitze summit from Grainau is via the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn (Bavarian Zugspitze Railway). The cogwheel railway has a station directly in Grainau (Zugspitzbahnhof Grainau) and provides a nostalgic journey up the mountain. You can take the train directly to the Schneeferner glacier station and then transfer to the Eibsee cable car for the final ascent to the summit, or take the Eibsee cable car directly from Eibsee, which is easily accessible from Grainau.
