Here is the original Grotte Chauvet with the fantastic Stone Age cave paintings! The cave was discovered in 1994 and is one of the world's most important archaeological sites. The around 400 cave paintings and 1,000 incised drawings found there are estimated to be more than 30,000 years old! The cave has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014.

The cave is not accessible, the entrance is secured with a heavy safe door and is monitored by video - even researchers are only allowed in here briefly and with special permission. However, the detour is still worth it because of the special flair of standing at one of humanity's oldest cultural sites and because of the great views along the way...

If you want to get a very good impression of the paintings, you should visit the associated visitor center ("Chauvet 2") with a "replica" of the cave (inside the former Caverne du Pont d'Arc) and an elaborately created, very authentic-looking replica visit the works of art.
