The founding of the first Christian community and the construction of the first church in Usseln took place in the early missionary period (around 800). The church, which has been the mother church of the Upland for centuries, is dedicated to Saint Kilian and has been Protestant since 1529.

The church, which was expanded into a three-aisled basilica in the 13th century, burned down to the Romanesque-early Gothic chancel in 1642 and was rebuilt after the Thirty Years' War. From 1896 to 1898 a fundamental conversion took place.
