Lying in the centre of the MacGillycuddy Reeks mountain range on Ireland’s south western Iveragh Peninsula, Carrauntoohil and its neighbours are particularly exposed to the Atlantic’s changeable moods. As a result, when attempting this grand summit, it’s important to check the forecast and be prepared to turn around if conditions turn sour.

There are three main routes to the top of Carrauntoohil with the Devil’s Ladder being the most used. None of the routes are easy and see loose rocks, scree, a ladder and significant steep sections. The peak is understandably popular with hikers wanting to bag the country’s highest mountain and erosion has caused extra difficulty on the trails so great care must be taken at all times. That being said, it’s still a very achievable adventure for most reasonably fit walkers with some experience of mountain hiking.
Most hikers begin at Cronin’s Yard, which has excellent facilities and car parking. It’s worth noting that dogs are not allowed on the mountain at all.
At the summit, you’ll find a large cross, rocky terrain and low dry stone shelter walls. In good weather, you’ll also be met with absolutely extraordinary views and the toughness of the ascent will soon be forgotten. From here, you can see the fantastic ridges of the MacGillycuddy peaks, the Atlantic Ocean, and innumerable glistening lakes.
