Głazy zostały usunięte i wykorzystane do brukowania dróg. Później okazało się, że zniszczyło to jedyny znany dotąd „Hunebed” we Fryzji.
Grób był badany trzykrotnie: w 1849, 1919 i 1996 roku. Najnowsze badania wykazały, że nie był to dolmen. Cechami charakterystycznymi dolmenu są kamienie wielkości człowieka i konstrukcja (częściowo) nad ziemią. Ten grób był tak zwaną skrzynią kamienną, konstrukcją głębokiego dołu z relatywnie małymi kamieniami.
Taka skrzynia kamienna była w dużej mierze podziemna, nie miała wejścia i zazwyczaj nie miała kamieni zamykających.
