The Hohllay Cave with its tunnels and rock formations is a great destination in Luxembourg's Little Switzerland. The Romans already cut stones from the rock for their building projects and mining continued in the Middle Ages. In particular, millstones were broken from the sandstone rocks. You can still clearly see the traces of the tools on the cave walls.

Easily one of the best highlights in the region! The bizarre patterns in the rock are due to mining from the Medieval times till the 19the century. The left over pillars keep it from "caving in" and gives it a somewhat Cathedrally feeling.

In the past, the material for the millstones required in the region was mined here and the hollow layers were created by human hands. This also applies to the immediately adjoining amphitheater, but no breakthrough was made here and so the cave now serves as a small concert stage. wandersuechtig.de/luxemburg-muellerthal-e1-rundweg-echternach-berdorf
