"The St. Nicholas Church was the center of the Slavic settlement area in medieval Rostock. Built as an early Gothic hall with four bays in brick, it was consecrated in 1312, initially without a tower and without a choir.
St. Nicholas Church of the Hanseatic City of RostockSt. Nicholas Church of the Hanseatic City of Rostock
The half-integrated square west tower was added in the 15th century. It was originally built with a 75-meter-high pointed roof. The tanner's chapel, which was initially built as a sacristy, also followed. The choir in the east was raised to create a passage for the Lohgerberstraße. The Schwibbogen was created.
The building, which was restored in 1893, was badly damaged in a bombing raid in 1942. The nave and the tower burned down, only the choir remained undamaged.
In 1952 the tower was given a pyramid roof with a baroque lantern. From 1976 onwards, the St. Nicholas Church was extensively renovated. reconstructed and retained several special features: The church's administrative rooms are located in the tower and the high Gothic hall roof houses 20 apartments.
Unfortunately, not much of the furnishings have been preserved due to the war damage. The Gothic-style high altar is currently in St. Mary's Church and can be viewed there. The nave is now a concert hall and the newly designed churchyard is an inviting place to relax." Source: ostsee.de/rostock/nikolai-kirche.html

The Nikolaikirche in the Hanseatic city of Rostock was built from 1230 and is therefore one of the oldest surviving hall churches in the Baltic Sea region. It is one of the three surviving large parish churches in the city and is named after Bishop Nikolaus von Myra. Like the Marienkirche and the Petrikirche, it belongs to the Evangelical-Lutheran inner-city parish of Rostock in the priory of Rostock in the Mecklenburg church district of the Evangelical-Lutheran Church in northern Germany. Church services are only occasionally held there. It sees itself as a supra-communal, spiritual and cultural center of the city, open to church and other cultural uses and is mostly used as a concert church.

The Nikolaikirche Rostock is not only a meeting place for church, art and culture, it also offers unique living and working spaces.
Construction began in 1230, heavily damaged in 1942, the nave and tower burned down, the organ and the baroque pulpit fell victim to the flames. In 1976 the tower, the church roof and the nave were rebuilt and apartments were built in the roof, today it is an event venue (concerts, markets, exhibitions).
The organ comes from the Philippus Church in Rummelsberg/Bavaria. It was ceremoniously inaugurated in Rostock in April 2002. Directly below the choir is the Schwibbogen, a narrow and low roadway. Above the Schwibbogen you can see a restored picture of St. Nicholas in front of the silhouette of Rostock.

A church without its own congregation or services, but with wonderful exhibitions, concerts with outstanding sound, comedy and even solar cells on the roof 😉

It's really worth it (!) to attend an event here!

The church was built as a brick church on a fieldstone base, an extension to include the choir and a bay of the nave to the west with the mighty, square tower followed in the 15th century. The original building had three naves with cross-ribbed vaults on round pillars. The first mention of the church, dedicated to the patron saint of fishermen and sailors, Saint Nicholas, dates from 1257. It was consecrated in 1312.

Rostock's city center has a total of four churches. One of them is St. Nicholas' Church. It dates back to the 13th century and is one of the oldest surviving hall churches in the Baltic region.
Over the centuries it has been rebuilt and expanded several times. Initially it consisted of three naves, which were later joined by a choir, a sacristy and a 123 m high church tower. The latter, however, fell victim to a storm in the 17th century.
With the new tower, which is only 84 m high, the imposing St. Nicholas' Church is now the smallest of Rostock's four churches. It is used for both religious and cultural events.

St. Nikolai was first mentioned in 1257, but is certainly a little older. It was the heart of the second of the four Rostock settlements. The church was consecrated in its current form in 1312. It was badly damaged in the Second World War. In a long-term reconstruction, a changed usage concept was implemented:
The church space is used for church services and events, there are apartments in the roof, and the tower was made usable for church administration tasks.

St. Nicholas Church is the only one of the three main churches that remained intact during World War II. The church dominates the skyline of Rostock. The impressive, three-aisled sacral building was built between 1381 and 1487 as a church for sailors and fishermen.

The church looks very good from the outside, unfortunately it is not always open - so I could not visit it. While looking for an entrance, I saw the picture of St. Nicholas - very colorfully attached to one of the outer walls.

The massive church with its small turret roof can be seen from afar.

The closer you get, the more you notice the flower boxes on the roof of the nave.

There are 13 apartments spread over three floors.

Concerts, theater performances, and exhibitions take place in the nave.
