The Coliseum (ancient name: Amphitheatrum Novum or Amphitheatrum Flavium, Italian: Colosseo) is the largest amphitheater built in ancient Rome, the largest enclosed building of Roman antiquity and still the largest amphitheater ever built in the world. Built between 72 and 80 AD, the Coliseum served as the venue for most of the most gruesome and brutal events hosted by members of the Imperial House for the entertainment and amusement of the free citizens of Rome and the Roman Empire, with free entry. Today, the ruin of the building is one of the landmarks of the city and at the same time a testimony to the ancient architecture of the ancient Romans.

The Colosseum is the calling card of Rome, 2000 years old. In 72 B.C. became the first
stone laid by order of Emperor Vespanian. The work was completed barely 8 years later
finished. Many Jewish prisoners were used to complete the colossal structure in such a short time. It certainly didn't take that long to build, barely 8 years. The design firm reportedly consisted of 12 architects.
The opening celebration reportedly lasted 100 days. The Colosseum served to entertain the people, rich and poor. Here gladiators fought against each other or with animals to the death. A visit (paying) is definitely worth it.

In December 2018 there had been and there was no need to buy the tickets in advance. At 10 o'clock directly for 12 € come in (combination ticket including forum). Of course the guides told us about eternal waiting times and of course wanted to do something good for 34 €. To be fair, one has to say that the Preus would have been incl. Guide. But we would have received for 10 € also. Therefore, in December do not prematurely fall for chatter, but at the entrance to even make a picture of the situation.

Impressive building! The best view from the outside is right across from the area of the Roman Forum. You can only get to the inside of the former arena with a guide. But you don't necessarily need that - the view from the stands is awesome and you can see everything. Personally, I think it's better to run at your own pace ...

The security controls are very strict: pocket knives and the like. must mercilessly in the garbage can.
