              The Ravenna gorge is a gorge in the Black Forest. It is a narrow side valley of the Hell Valley, through which the stream Ravenna flows and draws a hiking trail; The path is part of the home-town Hochschwarzwald. The approximately 4 km long gorge leads from the Höllental to the higher situated community Breitnau, to the Gemarkung it also belongs. The name of the gorge probably derives from the French ravine for gorge. [1]

              The wild creek Ravenna offers on the section through the valley several waterfalls. The two largest are the large Ravenna case with 16 m and the small Ravenna case with 6 m drop height.

              The creek once provided space for several mills. Some of these can still be found today in the Ravenna gorge and some are well preserved. At the top of the gorge is the Großjocken mill from 1883, which is a listed building. What is remarkable about this mill is that due to the great gradient of the Ravenna, the water is directed through the roof of the mill onto the water wheel.

              In the lower area the gorge is crossed by the 37 m high Ravenna Bridge, the viaduct of the Höllentalbahn. There are also the St. Oswald Chapel (built in 1148) and the Hofgut Sternen, where Marie Antoinette stayed in 1770 and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in 1779.

                    The Ravenna gorge is a worthwhile destination. The starting point, the Hofgut Sternen (the parking lots that belong to Hofgut are chargeable, but there are a number of free parking above the bus parking) in Höllental is one of the tourist highlights in the Black Forest and there are the inmates of various coaches around the various Outlets and restaurants. Once you have gone uphill for 100 meters, it will be quiet. The way up the canyon is not difficult to walk and beautiful. Those who are not really sure-footed and free from giddiness should return to the car park through the gorge. We had planned a circular route, which turned out to be a very narrow, barely negotiated precipitous zig-zag trail on a steep slope and thus not suitable for everyone.

                      Wow. What a nice little, just 3km short gorge. The most beautiful it comes to advantage when it has rained properly and the sun comes through, but even in warm and dry weather, this is a destination for a small round of nature and a little bit of Black Forest history.
