    Net buiten de poorten van de oude stad van Cartagena staat een imposant fort: Castillo San Felipe de Barajas. Het werd kort na de stichting van Cartagena gebouwd om de nieuwe koloniale havenstad, die goud en zilver opsloeg, te beschermen tegen aanvallen van piraten en kapers. In de loop der eeuwen werd duidelijk dat dit geen overbodige luxe was.
