The Diemelsee Dam, also known as Diemelstaumauer, is an impressive man-made monument and historical site nestled in the picturesque Diemelsee Nature Park, at an elevation of approximately 379 meters.     Het oorspronkelijke doel van het Diemelmeer was – in combinatie met het Edermeer – om de waterstanden van de Wezer en het Mittellandkanaal in evenwicht te brengen. Dit moest de scheepvaartomstandigheden op de Boven-Wezer verbeteren. Sinds 1960 staat de gelijkmaking van de Boven-Wezer voorop.

    Het ongeveer 42 meter hoge dam- en elektriciteitscentralegebouw, voltooid in 1924, is inmiddels een monument. Het uitzicht op de dam is indrukwekkend.

    De dam is ook een van de zielvolle plekken van het Sauerland. Het symboliseert het thema ‘kracht en macht’.
