    Het werd gebouwd van 1883 tot 1886 door het bedrijf Adrien Hallier en ontleent zijn naam Boulanger aan de generaal van het rijk, Michel Ordener.

    Fort Ordener werd in dezelfde tijd gebouwd met als doel fort Bessoncourt te dekken. Zijn rol was om de wegen vanuit Zwitserland en de Mulhouse-spoorlijn te controleren.

    Vanaf 1893 was dit fort via een strategische spoorlijn verbonden met een aantal andere forten rond Belfort.

    Tijdens de twee wereldoorlogen was Fort Ordener inactief. Het zal dan worden gebruikt als munitiedepot voor het leger.
