    Complex en opvallend, Cadair Idris is het Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) van het zuiden van Eryri (Snowdonia): een honingpotberg die bekend staat om zijn heerszuchtige kliffen, verleidelijke bergkammen en mooie bergmeertjes. Het is een piek gehuld in mythen. De naam, die ‘voorzitter van Idris’ betekent, is afgeleid van de Welshe legende van een reus die een bergachtige zetel creëerde om naar de sterren te kijken.

    Cadair Idris is een kleine bergketen, zeker de moeite waard voor elke actieve wandelaar. De klim is meedogenloos, maar je wordt beloond met een aantal schitterende uitzichten. Persoonlijk geef ik de voorkeur aan deze weergaven boven sommige van de 3000's. Het uitzicht vanaf de cairn is fantastisch als het een heldere dag is. Als het regent, schuilt u in de kleine hut in de buurt. Vanaf de westkant van het Cadair Idris-gebergte is het uitzicht op de Ierse zee onovertroffen.

    Cader Idris is niet de allerhoogste berg, met een hoogte van 892 meter - maar hij begint bijna op zeeniveau en biedt een werkelijk adembenemend panorama van het zuidelijke deel van Snowdonia. De hoogste top van de Cader Idris-rug heet Penygadair; je kunt een kleine schuilplaats vinden in de buurt van het hoogste punt.

    Aan weerszijden van de bergkam zijn prachtige meren, elk omgeven door steile rotswanden. Je kunt er in zwemmen, al heb je daar wel een ijzersterke constitutie voor nodig!
