Halverwege de 19e eeuw werd het kasteel bekend vanwege een langdurige echtscheidingsstrijd tussen de toenmalige eigenaar. Het circa 19 hectare grote kasteelpark, door tuinarchitect Maximilian Friedrich Weyhe ontworpen als een Engelse landschapstuin, is tegenwoordig een openbaar toegankelijk recreatiegebied.
Een bewaard gebleven overblijfsel is het voormalige tuinpaviljoen, dat nu een monument voor de politicus Ferdinand Lassalle herbergt.
