    The First Monk's Cell, Mariazell

According to tradition, the founding of Mariazell is attributed to a Benedictine monk named Magnus, who was sent from his mother monastery of St. Lambrecht to minister to the shepherds in the area surrounding present-day Mariazell. His journey led him to a hilltop at the site where the pilgrimage basilica now stands. There, he placed a wooden statue of Mary on a tree stump and built a wooden cell over it, which served as his chapel and living quarters.
