The site where the basilica of the Immaculate Conception stands was used as a sacred place from the fourteenth century, when a small church and a convent of Franciscan friars were erected at the behest of the Chiaramonte family, the remains of which are still visible next to those of the basilica .

The building, initially known as the church of San Francesco, took on its current form in 1788 and was subsequently named after the Immaculate Conception and elevated to the rank of minor basilica in 1940, at the behest of Pope Pius XII.
