It is a bridge where rival gangs, the Nicolotti and the Castellani, fought for years with their fists. Pugni means fist, hence its name.

The so-called "Bridge of Fists" has a curious past because fist fights between rival clans have taken place on it since the 13th century. This was even recorded in some old works of art, e.g. this one that can be admired in the Würzburg Residence: sammlung.pinakothek.de/de/artwork/jpxeyPVxJ7/joseph-heintz-dj/wettstreit-beim-ponte -dei-pugni

The so-called Bridge of Fists is located in the district of Dorsoduro in the south of Venice. Although it seems quite inconspicuous, a curious tradition took place on the bridge in the past: fists literally flew here!

We recommend following the story about this bridge: ... exciting 😉
