Teutoburger Wald Urlaubsregion

Der Teutoburger Wald – Radfahrer und Wanderer können hier tief abtauchen in die Geschichte. Auf etwa 40 Qualitätswegen Wanderbares Deutschland oder auf dem Top Trail of Germany Hermannshöhen gelangt ihr zu Fuß zu historischen Stätten, mitten durch die Natur und hinein in die Vergangenheit.

Zeugnisse aus 300 Millionen Jahren Erdgeschichte finden sich im UNESCO Global Geopark TERRA.vita. Besonders eindrucksvoll sind die Dörenther Klippen, die über vier Kilometer den Top Trail Hermannshöhen säumen. Vor Urzeiten bildeten sie die Küste eines Ozeans, dessen Salz bis heute in der Tiefe erhalten ist. In Solequellen kommt es vielerorts zutage. Solequellen, Moore und Mineralwässer, reine Luft und Thermalquellen bilden heute die natürlichen Heilmittel der Bäder des Teutoburger Waldes. Zu den bekannten gehören Bad Driburg, Bad Oeynhausen und Bad Salzuflen.

Eines der herausragenden Naturdenkmale des Teutoburger Waldes liegt ganz in der Nähe von Horn-Bad Meinberg. Die sagen- und mythenumrankten Felsnadeln, die als Externsteine bezeichnet werden, waren sowohl christliche Andachtsstätte als auch heidnisches Heiligtum.

Ganz in der Nähe reckt Hermann sein Schwert bei Detmold mehr als 50 Meter hoch in den Himmel. Das riesenhafte Standbild erinnert an die Varusschlacht im Jahre 9 nach Christus. Von diesem Ort startet die Römer-Lippe-Route, die als Radweg nicht nur Geschichtsfans kurzweilig bis Xanten am Rhein führt.

Weitere markante Baudenkmäler liegen an einzelnen Rad- oder Wanderrouten: das Große Eisenbahnviadukt Altenbeken, die Sparrenburg in Bielefeld, die Burg Ravensberg bei Borgholzhausen, das Schloss Neuhaus in Paderborn oder die Ruine der frühmittelalterlichen Iburg bei Bad Driburg sowie dutzende historische Mühlen. Faszinierend sind auch die Klöster – vor allem das UNESCO Welterbe Corvey und Kloster Dalheim in Lichtenau mit seinen einzigartigen Ausstellungen.
