The attempt to actually get up to the glacier turned out to be bumpier than expected. You can get quite close on the F985. The "road" becomes incredibly bumpy as it goes along. Not recommended for gravel bikes. It also gets quite steep at times, 20% and even more further up.

The Glätschersee was definitely a highlight. The Viking village isn't a must-see. The lighthouse can only be reached on foot. (Fence) There's an additional entrance fee.

The view is worthwhile, but not really accessible by bike. The last 2km are a hiking trail, which is partially impassable (actually closed to bikes as well).
The rest of the route is quite rideable.
You occasionally cycle through deeper black sand or coarse volcanic gravel areas. But it's all rideable

We simply drove along the paved road from the parking lot to the small harbor. It wasn't particularly spectacular, but it was still nice to see the North Atlantic and its black sand at the end. If you're interested, you can take the ferry over to the small island.

Glugafoss is beautiful. In this case, it was the starting point. Initially, the road was still reasonably passable. Later, it got worse, much worse, and ultimately became virtually impassable. Nevertheless, the panorama with the glacier was spectacular.

🤬😵💫 50 km/h headwind with gusts of around 70 km/h – that was only rideable directly into the wind. A bit sideways, heading straight for the ditch 😅 plus light rain and then hail! It was incredibly painful in that wind. Good thing the helmets have visors... It was barely rideable. A straight stretch

A beautiful and rideable route. At the end, the sand on the 20% gradient slowed me down. Getting to the last parking lot on Hekla isn't easy. The weather cooperated, and the panorama is spectacular, even if there's apparently nothing to see.

This was a purely road tour (on asphalt). The panorama was still beautiful. It climbed to over 600m. The gradient was quite steep. On the descent, the brakes got quite hot.
