La Fontaine Gardens are located in the historic center of Nîmes. They were from 1745 at the request of Louis XV. Built by Jacques Philippe Mareschal (engineer of the king, director of the fortifications of the provinces of Languedoc).

The gardens with two large ancient monuments, the Temple of Diana and the Magne Tower, extend on a hill over an area of about 15 hectares.

Listed as historical monuments in 1840 under the title Jardin Remarkable, they include a typical French garden from the 18th century and a Mediterranean landscape style with pine, chestnut and cedar trees in the alleys.

Elements such as balusters, sculptures, vases, and benches have further enriched the decor, and there is a carved fountain in the center. In the nineteenth century, new species were added to the vegetation and additional developments were carried out, such as a rock cave and a water basin.

The gardens of La Fontaine are historically considered to be one of the first public parks in Europe and are one of the most pleasant, especially in summer.

The Jardins de la Fontaine are one of the first public parks in Europe. The 15-hectare, enchantingly beautiful green area is a real retreat in the middle of Nîmes. In the lower part, a canal, pools with balusters on the edges, statues, shady benches and the scent of flax flowers invite you to stroll. Paths lead through the landscaped garden with cleverly arranged Mediterranean plants, "rock gardens" and views of the city to the Magne Tower in the upper part.

It is the most romantic, but also the most enigmatic monument in Nîmes, which is certainly associated with the imperial sanctuary.
Its side aisles, which once led to a higher level, its various vaulted ceilings, the niches of its large hall do not correspond to the typical constructive elements of Greco-Roman temples. The origin of the name is also puzzling.
Around 1570, the Venetian architect Palladio made numerous sketches during his stay in Nîmes, before a fire gave the Temple of Diana its current appearance. Today it only consists of a barrel-vaulted nave and two side aisles, one of which, the southeast corridor, has been almost completely destroyed.

Jardin de La Fontaine actually means nothing more than a garden that includes fountains and this garden does this to an extent that threatens to make me dizzy.

Unfortunately out of order because of the drought there is a lack of water….

In the 18th century, the Jardins de la Fontaine were built on the ancient site of the spring, which stretches from the Magnet Tower to the Temple of Diana. They were one of the first public gardens in Europe. The work led to the discovery and excavation of the Roman buildings. For many Nimes, the garden is still a favorite place for a stroll in the city.
