Fireman Schubert” on the market square is a reminder of what was probably the worst fire disaster Northeim had to experience.
The fire on May 28, 1832 left 80 completely destroyed buildings and 44 badly damaged houses, including the town hall, the town pharmacy, the post office and the butchers' guild house.
This changed the cityscape on the market permanently.
Over the course of the night, the fire had become so large that the east side of the market also appeared to have fallen victim to the flames. The hired coach Schubert, who was on the roof of the blacksmith's guild house, fought against the rising flames with courage and in defiance of death and thus the east side of the
market saved.
On January 13, 1855, around 4 a.m., a fire broke out in the back building
of the house at Schafstrasse 33, today Medenheimer Strasse. 7 fellow firefighters, including firefighter Schubert, died in the flames. A memorial was erected by the city of Northeim in the old cemetery for the firefighters, which can still be visited today.
