On a clear day, the Maultasch castle ruins offer a magnificent view of the Bozen valley basin. The late afternoon hours are particularly suitable for taking photos when the sun is in the west.

The castle was probably built around 1200 by the Counts of Tyrol and served as a border fortress against Bozen. However, when Count Meinhard II occupied Bozen, the castle lost its strategic importance around 1300 at the latest. The Neuhaus castle ruins are also often called Maultasch Castle because, according to legend, Princess Margarethe Maultasch (1318 to 1369) liked to stay at the castle. Neuhaus has been owned by the Counts of Tannenberg-Enzenberg since 1733. In the years 1990 to 1996 the entire castle complex was extensively restored by Georg Graf Enzenberg.
