The Lower Fortress, built in 1837, is located at the Lueg Pass near Golling and is today an impressive historic structure directly on the cycle path through the Salzach Gorge. Originally serving as a customs and toll post around 1160, the pass was used strategically. The first fortifications were built in the 13th century. In the 17th century, Prince-Archbishop Paris Count Lodron had a new fortress built with the so-called Blockhaus to secure the national border. After being destroyed in the early 19th century, the fortress was rebuilt between 1834 and 1837.

The cycle path today leads through an old tunnel hewn into the rock directly below the fortress and offers a special combination of nature and history. The cool passage and the wildly romantic surroundings make this section a highlight for cyclists. A gentle incline, well-paved path, and the proximity to the historic site invite you to take a short break or explore the surrounding area on foot.
