The Höhenburg is one of the most important historic monuments on the Upper Rhine and a landmark of the district of Waldshut.
Their first construction is suspected between the years 1125 and 1141. The previous castle was owned by the Counts of Küssenberg, the diocese of Constance and the Counts of Sulz.
The castle, which later became a fortress, was destroyed by a fire set by the occupation on March 8, 1634, at the approach of the Swedish army in the Thirty Years' War, and by a landslide on December 25, 1664.
In the 19th century, the excavation of the castle ruins began, which has since become a popular tourist destination in the region.

A nice destination to start off and pause. Invert and continue. Very good with the MTB over many trails off the road. High as down the trails are demanding but mobile. Roots and steep slopes should not bother with the narrow trails. Otherwise it is better to drive outside on the street.

I drive to the castle very often, only 6 km from my home. Then from Kalten Wangen on the mountain ridge on the Way of St. James to the castle, there enjoy the fabulous views, there is also a restaurant with garden seat. There are also pension rooms. From there you can then continue to Rheinheim or Lienheim, all the way to the Rhine, where then again 1000 possibilities arise, e.g. in Switzerland over Glatttal direction Bülach, or better the trail for demanding expectations of Eglisau with a stopover on the north side of the Rhine to the Rhine Falls to Neuhausen (Schaffhausen) From the castle to the Rhine Falls but you should be fit, and expect 50km.
