The only one left of the 9 fifteenth-century Spanish mills that once dotted the lagoon; initially they worked thanks to the wave motion due to the cyclic entry of the waters into the lagoon, but later, due to needs perhaps also due to the structural modification of the lagoon, they were transformed in the course of the sixteenth century into windmills. The surviving specimen stands a short distance (a few tens of meters) from the end of the isthmus on which the center of Orbetello stands, on the north side of the Leopoldina dam (the bridge that connects Orbetello to the Argentario).

"Mulino spagnolo" (the Spanish mill). It is located in the middle of the water, is apparently a historic building and lies against the background of the lagoon "bella figura"

The last of 9 mills that were built here by the Senese in the 15th century. Unlike windmills in Holland, these mills did not work with the wind but with the sea currents of the lagoon to grind flour! In the 16th century, however, the Spaniards converted the mills to wind operation for unknown reasons.

The Spanish Mill is the only survivor of the nine mills built in the Orbetello lagoon during the 16th century. It has a circular shape with a conical roof and is located within the lagoon. In the past it exploited both the energy of the wind and the movement of water to grind the grain which was transported here with the "barchini", typical boats of the area.
The mill, renovated and consolidated during the Spanish period, can only be visited by boat.

In the fifteenth century, 9 were built, all developed in line in the lagoon. They were built by the Sienese, with the function of grinding the grain (which was brought to the mill with the so-called barchini of the area) to produce flour. At the time they worked thanks to the force of the water (which entered and exited the lagoon with ebbs and flows every 6 hours from the tombolo of Giannella causing a hydraulic phenomenon of vast proportions) with which the millstones were turned. A century and a half later, precisely in 1557, Orbetello became the capital of the State of the Presìdi, created by the will of the King of Spain Philip I. It was therefore under Spanish rule that the sail blades were added to the mill, so that the force of the many winds (four mistral and five sirocco) that beat on the lagoon could be exploited. The 9 mills placed in line by the inhabitants of Orbetello faced a huge production by making the most of both the movement of the currents and that of the winds, thus determining a phenomenon of hydraulic and wind engineering of great historical importance. Today, of the nine mills mentioned above, only one remains, recently restored.

This surprising sight, which immediately makes you think of a city sunken in the sea (who has never heard of 'Atlantis'), is what visitors see at the end of the headland that separates the northern 'Laguna di Ponente' from the southern 'Laguna di Levante'.

Even early in human history, people were clever enough to harness the power of the elements - which could be a threat on the one hand, but also helpful on the other. A total of nine tidal mills once diligently did their work here.
