The Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh peoples have lived on the land around Vancouver for thousands of years. The Salish used the originally large sandbar for hunting and cultural activities and settled the area in the early to mid-19th century.
Since the 1850s, the island has increasingly been used for industrial purposes, with earth from False Creek being reclaimed to form Granville Island. Completed in 1916, Granville Island housed warehouses, factories, and shops. Originally called Industrial Island, it was later named after the bridge that runs directly over it.
In the 1950s, Granville Island became a peninsula; the branch channel was filled in to make way for more industrial land. Since the 1970s, Granville Island has transformed from an industrial area into a popular public space and an important artistic and cultural center at False Creek.
