is absolutely worth seeing.

Above the town lies the ruins of Metternich Castle, with a beautiful view of the Moselle valley.

The town has a jetty where various excursion boats dock.

At the apex of the Cochemer Krampen lies the small wine-growing village of Beilstein, the epitome of Moselle romance. Beilstein once even had town rights, was well fortified and for a long time could only be reached by water. The imperial fortresses above the town and the city fortifications were blown up in 1689 at the height of the French campaigns of conquest in the 17th century. The Metternich castle ruins with their pentagonal keep house a restaurant and offer a wonderful view over Beilstein, which is nestled in the stream valley, and far over the Moselle.

Since the Middle Ages, the Lords of Beilstein had issued letters of protection to Jews for a fee and allowed them to settle. The town owes a good part of its prosperity to this policy.

Beilstein as an entire ensemble is a listed building. The picturesque Moselle town has repeatedly served as a film set since the 1930s.

The center of the town is the market square, which Johann von Braunshorn had built in 1322. The old tithe house (much darker and more threatening than a modern tax office), the former St. Christoph's Church and the Metternicher Hof from 1727, now a hotel, are grouped around it. The whole place consists of charming buildings that form beautiful groups and are connected to each other by narrow streets and stairs.

Also worth seeing is the room of the former synagogue and, in the huge church, the miraculous image of the Black Madonna, left here by Spanish occupying troops in the 17th century.
