The first known bridge that crossed the Rezat was made of wood. Since Windsbach was an important traffic junction on the military and trade route Nuremberg-Ulm-Strasbourg, the bridge repeatedly fell into disrepair due to the heavy traffic and had to be replaced regularly. The Windsbach district office was asked several times by the Ansbach office to keep its traffic routes in order. Due to the Margrave Wars and the subsequent times of hardship, the city treasury was so exhausted that the necessary expenses could not be met.
