The Hoge Kempen National Park is the first and so far the only one in Belgium. It was opened in 2006 and, among other things, the pine forests and the heathland are protected here.

There is no visitor's reception at the Mechelse Heide entrance gate. There is only a shelter with instructions, rules and a map of the hiking area on which the hiking routes are indicated that depart from this gate or are located in the Mechelse heide hiking area. Other facilities at this gateway include a picnic area and a cafeteria open from February to November. There is also a camping site near the cafeteria.

From the Salamander hiking car park, the cycle path leads into the Hoge Kempen National Park, where after a few metres you can turn off into the Kikbeek valley. Here you will find a wonderful heath landscape, large sand dunes and an almost Scandinavian-looking lake area.

There are several cycle paths with different route options through the Hoge Kempen National Park. The paths are mostly asphalted and easy to ride. In summer they often lead through shady forest and are particularly spectacular during the summer/late summer months when the heather is in full bloom.
