The area, which is now a protected area, is open to the public. The gray and red rocks of the Zechstein and Rotlegen are visible, as is the Gipshut. Display boards provide information about the geological connections. Great!

The former limestone mining pit is now protected as a nature reserve and national geotope and is looked after by the Community for the Preservation of Cultural Assets in Tornesch.

The lime pit offers unique geoscientific treasures and a habitat for rare plants and animals.

The oldest geological rock layers in the North German lowlands are exposed in the Liether Kalkgrube. The layers, which are otherwise found at a depth of around 6 to 7 km, rose to the present earth's surface as part of a salt dome.

The Liether Kalkgrube is open to the public all year round as a local recreation area.

The Liether Kalkgrube lies in the circle Pinneberg, east of the village Klein Nordende. It is a former open pit, which was set in 1986. The area was designated as a nature reserve in 1991 and honored in 2006 as a "National Geotope".
