Hirzel is a town belonging to Horgen in the canton of Zurich, Switzerland.
From the dissolution of Horgen on May 13, 1773 until December 31, 2017, Hirzel was a politically independent municipality.
On January 1, 2018, Hirzel was merged again with the municipality of Horgen.
The population during the last centuries can be described as rural and agricultural. Since 1950, more new buildings have been built.
Sightseeing attractions:
– The birthplace of Johanna Spyri (Meta-Heusser-Heim) and the Spyrimuseum are internationally known due to the popularity of the fictional character “Heidi”.
– The moorland landscapes of the Hirzel in combination with the hills and forests are typical of the Hirzel.
– The hilly landscape with its many large old linden trees on every drumlin is a popular motif for landscape paintings and landscape photographs. From the Zimmerberg ridge above Höchi you can enjoy an impressive view of the Sihlwald and the surrounding hills and mountains.
– The old mule track from Lake Zug to Horgen on Lake Zurich leads over the Hirzel Höhi and is now signposted. Goethe also wrote about the steep path from the Sihlbrugg over the Rübgarten, on which he continued after a rest in the “Krone” Sihlbrugg.
