Its two white towers are easy to see, even from further away; because the Basilica da Estrela stands on a hill. The imposing building stands out white against the blue sky. Directly opposite the church is a tram 28 stop and the Jardim da Estrela park.
The reason for building the Basilica da Estrela was the promise made by Queen Maria I: If she had a son, she would have a church built. José was born, construction began in 1779 and the church was consecrated in 1790.
The huge church has a large dome. The basilica was built in the late baroque and neoclassical style. On the front facade are the two twin bell towers with figures of saints. Huge amounts of gray, pink and yellow marble were built inside the church. Many paintings make the church so beautiful and worth seeing. And of course the tomb of Queen Maria I is also located here.
