When Italy declared war on the Austro-Hungarian Empire on May 24, 1915, the northeastern borders were different than today. The canal valley (Val Canale), with the municipalities of Tarvis, Malborghetto Valbruna and Pontebba was in Carinthia and the border ran along the peaks that separate it from the Val Dogna valley, a deep, wild gorge that runs from the village of Dogna into the heart of the Julian Alps Alps leads.

The views from the Alpe Adria cycle path are impressive. But the view high above Dogna is something special. From here you can see far into the valley in both directions.
