The Nikolaikirche (Estonian Niguliste kirik) is one of the landmarks of the Estonian capital Tallinn.
The church was founded between 1230 and 1275 by merchants from Westphalia who had moved from Gotland to Tallinn. As Tallinn was not fortified at that time, they built a fortified church as the center of the settlement. Only in the 14th century, after completion of the city wall, the Nikolaikirche became a common parish church. It was consecrated to Saint Nicholas, patron saint of merchants, sailors and fishermen.
