In 1981, Mr. Franz Call was concerned with the idea of opening a riding stable for his hotel in St. Vigil. A special focus should be the ride in the area in the nature park Fanes Sennes. Mr. Call was informed about different breeds of horses and came in conversation with a hotel guest on the Icelandic horse. This suggested that he should observe the Icelandic horse in its natural environment in Iceland and test its suitability for trekking.

Meanwhile, Mr. Call and Mr. Leimegger bought 7 Icelandic horses in Germany and opened this riding stable in St. Vigil. They were enthusiastic about the performance of the horses. A trip to Iceland was organized. Seven people participated. A well-known riding instructor showed the South Tyrolean horse lovers the basic concepts of Icelandic riding. Everyone was fascinated. As a result, Mr. Call imported another 6 Icelandic horses to St.Vigil.

On April 6, 1993, the application for admission of the South Tyrolean Icelandic Horse Breeding Association to the F.E.I.F. (International Icelandic Horse Breeders Association).

The application was unanimously approved with the condition to change the name of South Tyrolean into Italian Icelandic Horse Breeders Association, to avoid the emergence of two clubs in one country.
