The Glatzenstein is 572 m above sea level. NN [1] high mountain of the Franconian Alb from Jura limestone. It is mainly located in the municipality of Neunkirchen am Sand, parts of it belong to Kirchensittenbach and Schnaittach in the district of Nürnberger Land.

The heavily forested Glatzenstein is located in Hersbrucker Schweiz, the part of the Franconian Alb named after Hersbruck, and belongs to the Franconian Switzerland-Veldenstein Forest Nature Park.

The mountain top of the Glatzenstein lies around 500 meters north of Weißenbach and around 1 kilometer northeast of Kersbach, both parts of the municipality of Neunkirchen. The municipality of Kirchensittenbach, whose district of Oberkrumbach is located about 1.5 kilometers east of the mountain, extends close to the summit. The municipality of Schnaittach, whose district Siegersdorf is around 1 kilometer north of the mountain, extends to the north flank of the mountain.

The small Kersbach flows as an eastern tributary of the Schnaittach in a north-east-south-west direction west of the Glatzenstein.

Die Festung Rothenberg ist eine Festung und ehemalige Veste auf dem gleichnamigen, 588 m hohen Berg bei Schnaittach in der Fränkischen Alb.
Anfänge und Vorgeschichte (ab ca. 600 v. Chr.)

Die erste Besiedelung des Rothenbergs ist vermutlich auf keltische Stämme der Hallstattzeit zurückzuführen, die dort möglicherweise ein Oppidum errichtet hatten, ähnlich wie die nahen Anlagen auf der Houbirg und der Ehrenbürg. Im Hochmittelalter entstanden in unmittelbarer Umgebung zahlreiche Höhenburgen (z. B. Osternohe, Reicheneck, Spitzenberg, Strahlenfels, Wildenfels, Winterstein und Kleiner Hansgörgel). Wann genau die erste mittelalterliche Befestigungsanlage auf dem Rothenberg entstand, ist nicht bekannt.
Der Alte Rothenberg (1254–ca. 1300)

Eine erste Anlage, die als Rothenberg bezeichnet wurde, ist der Burgstall Alter Rothenberg nordwestlich der heutigen Festung. Etymologisch rührt der Name entweder von dem dort vorhandenen rotfarbenen Sandstein oder der Begebenheit, dass es sich um einen „gerodeten Berg“ gehandelt hatte, her. Die erste schriftliche Erwähnung der Herren vom Rothenberg (ehemals jene von Hiltpoltstein und Lauf), die dort saßen, datiert auf das Jahr 1254.[1] Dieses Geschlecht starb jedoch noch im 13. Jahrhundert aus und die Burg gelangte durch Heirat in den Besitz der Wildensteiner. Nachdem die Anlage vermutlich bei einer Fehde zerstört worden war, wählte man für den Neubau eine andere Erhebung.

Etwa zwischen 1300 und 1330 errichtete Dietrich von Wildenstein eine Gipfelburg auf dem heutigen Rothenberg. Die Wildensteiner verkauften diese 1360 an den böhmischen König Karl IV. Der spätere römisch-deutsche Kaiser ließ die Burg zur Veste ausbauen, um das von ihm geschaffene Neuböhmen abzusichern.
