The Literaturhaus "Uwe Johnson" is located in a four-storey former warehouse near Klützer Marktplatz, which was built around 1890. The building served as a granary from the late 19th to the 1950s. In the following years he was practically without use.
In 1989, the planning of a reuse of the store began. In the years that followed, the idea of converting the building into a literary-cultural house with a focus on the writer Uwe Johnson became more concrete.
Despite the new use of the memory as a literary house, the architectural beauty of the industrial monument was preserved, with the preservation of the wooden structure in the foreground. With the renovation, the architects pursued a style that would reflect the original character of the house and document Mecklenburgian history.
Old support and ceiling beams were preserved as well as grain sheds and gate and window arches. Thus, despite the modernization of the interior design kept its old face and the exterior also captivates with the typical North German brick facade.
After two years of renovation, the store was handed over to its new purpose on April 7, 2006. Since then, the warehouse houses a permanent exhibition on the writer Uwe Johnson, the city information and the city library and is also a forum for cultural activities.
The Literaturhaus "Uwe Johnson" presents in a variety of ways - readings, workshops, exhibitions, discussions, workshops, etc. - the fascinating world of literature. It is a house for literature and a meeting place with literature.
