The Scala hill (in French Col de l'Échelle) is located on the Italian-French border and is a rather easy climb if tackled from Briançon, while it is long and hard from Bardonecchia. If on the French side only the last two/three kilometers are really uphill, the Piedmont side presents the central five kilometers at 7% with peaks in double figures for trained legs. It is particularly beautiful to observe, while climbing by bike, the Red Spire, one of the most famous mountains in the Cottian Alps.
