The Fürstenberg chapel was first mentioned in a document in 1429. Before that there were already mentions about a castle complex, but it was destroyed in 1343/1344. The medieval ring-shaped ramparts can still be seen in the forest on the Fürstenberg. There is the Oldenburg, a large rampart with the church in the middle, and Richter's little head, a small medieval stone castle lower down. The ruins of the castle are no longer there. The ramparts are now protected as ground monuments.

In 1610 the small church was repaired by the Paderborn prince-bishop Theodor von Fürstenberg, which is reported by an inscription above the entrance. The chapel on the Fürstenberg was badly damaged in the Thirty Years War, but it was repaired again in 1663 and converted into a baroque church as it still exists today.

In 1826 the chapel was also renewed again. Between 1991 and 1998 the chapel was restored again.
