                In many places on the heath you will find picturesque thatched buildings, the sheepfolds. They have always been of great importance to heathland farmers, since their most important fertilizer, sheep manure, was collected in them. To this day, the Heidschnucke are cared for in such a way that they only have time to digest when they are back in the barn in the evening. This attitude helps to ensure that no unwanted nutrients are introduced into the heath. Hardly any plants other than heather can grow on the nutrient-poor soil.
