The Wolfsburg is a 1302 for the first time mentioned in documents, medieval Niederburg and Wasserburg, which later transformed into a Renaissance castle. It is located in eastern Lower Saxony in the named after her city Wolfsburg, in whose property she is since 1961. The Wolfsburg developed from a residential tower on the Aller to a moated castle with a fortress character. In the 17th century, it became a representative but nevertheless fortified castle, which represents the north-easternmost representative of the Weser Renaissance. Founder and builder was the noble family of those of Bartensleben. After the extinction of her line in 1742, the Wolfsburg passed by inheritance to the Counts of the Schulenburg.

Since the middle of the 18th century, the lords of the castle were the counts of the Schulenburg. Their Wolfsburger line founded the marriage of the heiress Anna Adelheit Catharina from the family of Bartensleben with Adolf Friedrich Imperial Count von der Schulenburg. The economic basis of the Wolfsburger formed the regional far-reaching Gutswirtschaft. Only with the establishment of Volkswagenwerk and city in 1938 did the agricultural and forestry structure change. On the estates among other things the Wolfsburger lords of the castle developed a modern automobile factory as well as the quarters for the factory workers and their families.
