The Municipality of Methoni in 2009 placed this statue of Macedonian King Philip II to mark their connection to the famous battle by what many saw as the greatest King of Macedonia and his injury in this area. The presence of Adriandas at the site of Methoni appeals to Greek nationalism of the Macedonians in Macedonia. Modern Methoni is of tourist interest mainly for its beaches, the wetland, and sites of the archaeological excavations.
In 354 BC Philip II incorporated ancient Methoni into his Macedonian kingdom. In 355–354 he besieged Methone, the last city on the Thermaic Gulf controlled by Athens. Distinguished for his military abilities but also for his political and diplomatic genius he is credited with uniting the Greeks for revenge against the Persians and to create the necessary conditions for the empire of his son, Alexander the Great.
