With the first written mention in 704 Arnstadt is the city in Thuringia, which has the oldest evidence of its existence and one of the oldest cities in Germany outside the Roman settlement areas. Until the 18th century Arnstadt was a residence of the Counts of Schwarzburg. From Arnstadt the first documented mention of the Thuringian Bratwurst (1404) and the German wheat beer outside of Bavaria (1617). Arnstadt is one of five Thuringian Bach Cities: Johann Sebastian Bach had his first employment as organist at the new church (1703-1707). As early as the 17th century, numerous ancestors of Bach, also called "Bache", were court, council or church musicians (Wikipedia).
