The castle, located on a low limestone plateau in the middle of the city, was the northern border festival of the Halberstadt bishops. From here King Barbarossa went into battle against Henry the Lion in 1181. During the Thirty Years' War, the mighty castle was a frequent target for imperial and Swedish troops. In 1645 the Swedes destroyed the castle under General Königsmark. Only in 1922 was part of the castle rebuilt as a private residence. The castle is not open to the public.
