In the Deister, a mountain range almost 400 m high west of Hanover with a wide view of the north German lowlands, there are two Gauss stones. The survey point referred to here as Deister I is located in the southeastern Deister on the top of the Kalenberg. Gauss carried out degree measurements from here as early as 1822. The original Gaußstein was destroyed during the surveying work in the 1820s. The stone erected here today was moved here from Falkenberg in 1998.
