Mylau Castle has its origins in the 12th century, from which the stately keep and the two square towers also come. Up until the end of the 18th century, first noble families and later merchants lived in the complex. Then a factory was housed in the walls. Today you can visit a museum here.

In 1808, the Mylau master weaver Christian Gotthelf Brückner tried to lease Mylau Castle, which had been vacant since 1794. He was looking for suitable rooms for the establishment of a spinning mill, which was funded by the state against the background of the Napoleonic continental barrier. In February 1808 Brückner founded a company together with the Fritz brothers from Greiz, but it was not until 1809 that the first hand-operated spinning machines were installed in the castle rooms. When the castle spinning mill broke down in 1828, 14,400 spindles were affected. Nevertheless, rooms in the castle remained in use by brückner at least until 1841 and were then vacant again. Between 1864 and 1894, the textile printing company Baust used the castle as a manufacturing site for the production of black-printed tablecloths and towels made of wool flannel.
