The chapel of St. Rochus was built at the instigation of the then abbot of the Cistercian abbey in Ebrach Hieronymus Höllein. After the heavy year of plague 1611, he decided to build a chapel with cemetery on the hill above the village Großgressingen next to the already built in 1594 infirmary for leprosy patients. Ready in 1613, as an inscription on the southern cornice shows, the chapel was completed.
The chapel is built in the post-Gothic style with three-sided finish and ridge turret. Above the side portal is the coat of arms of the builder Abbot Hieronymus Höllein. The main altar is early Baroque, the altarpiece represents "Maria Himmelfahrt" with St. Roch and Sebastian and was made in 1779. The two rococo side altars date from the middle of the 18th century. The right altar is dedicated to St. Sebastian and the left the hl. Rochus, the two church patrons, consecrated.

Saint Roch, to whom this chapel is consecrated as patron, was born in Montpellier, France, in the middle of the 14th century. He is popularly known - alongside Saint Sebastian as a co-patron - as the "plague saint". The motive for choosing the cartridge is obvious (see the text by Jacques above).
Characteristic for the depiction of Rochus in paintings and as a statue is that he usually indicates a plague bump on his leg; Often a dog can also be seen at his feet, because according to legend, when he was caring for people suffering from the plague, he himself was sick with it and withdrew into solitude, and provided him with bread every day. The feast day of Saint Roch is on August 16.
